The Rook: The Unshakable Castle
The Rook is a highly powerful long-range piece that moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically (along files or ranks). Each player starts the game with two Rooks occupying the corners of the board.
Endgame & Castling: Rooks are particularly devastating in the endgame, where open files allow them to cut off the enemy King or escort friendly Pawns to promotion. They are also central to the castling move, which helps tuck the King into safety.
